OUR HISTORY 歴史

OUR HISTORY 歴史上

Origins 起源

Jishichi Ozeki began selling Gifu Paper Lanterns during the first year of Emperor Meiji’s reign. For the coronation ceremony of the Showa Emperor (3rd year of reign) Ozeki provided a pair of large lanterns and has been bathed in good fortune ever since. Ozeki lanterns still stand in the throne room and inner palace to this day.

Foundations 成り立ち

In the 26th year of the Showa Emperor, worldly sculptor Isamu Noguchi came to visit the Ozeki shop and later went on to produce the award-winning and well-crafted AKARI works. The meeting of Gifu Paper Lanterns and Isamu Noguchi gave honor to the Japanese traditional art as well as allowed Gifu Paper Lanterns to surge ahead in a way previously impossible.

Ozeki, whose succession in the traditional craft has taken place in this old, Meiji Era shop, continues to add new value to the Gifu Paper Lantern art form. His works possess patents, utility models, design registrations, as well as numerous awards related to design and invention.

In addition to the study of the art as it was cultivated up to this point, we feel that our duty in life is to continue offering these items of high-culture with a mind on the current era and a pure heart.
